Right Light Fight: Capturing The Perfect PR Shot

What makes a perfect shot? Every photographer will have their own opinion but one thing that remains constant is having proper lighting. Any shot is made better when it is presented in the correct way. This becomes especially important when shooting for a company or firm. It is essential that the client is made as appealing as possible. Here are some lighting facts to consider:

When the light source is broad, the light is softer: Think about it this way: the more light there is, the more luminescence. This sounds obvious but many photographers forget this in practice. A broad light source lessens shadows, suppresses texture, and reduces contrast. This is ideal for subjects that need to be framed in a gentle manner. Conversely, a narrow light source provides distinction and sophistication. Photographers should keep this in mind and determine what “feel” they want.

Closer light sources provide softer light: When a shot is taken with the light source nearby, the result is typically a softer shot. Moving the light source farther away makes the light relatively smaller, and therefore narrower.

Learn about bouncing light: Taking the perfect PR shot may not mean directly flashing a light at your subject. There are times when it is better to use bouncing light. Aim a narrow light source at a generally matte surface such as a wall or ceiling. This reflects the light and helps diffuse the light over a wider area.

Love shadows: Shadows are not a bad thing- when they are applied correctly. Shadows help define three-dimensionality. Lighting from the side, above, or below casts shadows which creates angles.

Remember to show your shots to a more experienced photographer. The critique will help build skill and confidence.
